Abstract

The article is the result of the analysis of disputes by leisure spaces in the Fortaleza of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During this period, the economic elites reshaped the city in order to discipline their inhabitants. While the new economic and social elites, composed of merchants linked to domestic and foreign trade, the professions such as doctors and lawyers, mostly graduates trained abroad or in the prestigious Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, and the middle class of shopkeepers, artists, poets and other workers learned, valued and occupied the central areas of the city, the more remote regions with lower infrastructure conditions were bequeathed to the poor, blacks and immigrants in the state. To that end, we need a contrast of different sources: journals, books and almanacs chronic.
