Abstract

The writings of Francisco Freire Alemão when he headed up the presidency and the Botany
Section of the Scientific Exploration of the Northern Provinces constitute the main subject of discussion in this paper, in view of the importance of these narratives for the construction of a historical identity of this part of the Brazilian Empire founded on training project of national history and constitution of the Nation prepared by scientific, cultural and political in the second half of the nineteenth century. It is our intention to relate the speech Freire Alemão with the historical, scientific and cultural that Brazil was experiencing, now that this has required a more refined of all brazilian territory, seeking greater possibility to control and civilize the regions more distant from the center imperial policy, and is also the period of affirming and legitimizing the national Science and science that this would provide the means to consolidate a sovereign identity and unique to the country, linking their studies through the regional to the national.
