THE HIDDEN STAR: THE PROBLEMS OF JUDAISM IN THE OITOCENTIST CEARÁ (ARACATI AND FORTALEZA, SECOND HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY)

Abstract

This study has as an objective to discuss the phenomenon of the Franco-Jewish immi-gration that was established for Ceará, which occurred during the second half of the nineteenth century, as well as to elaborate a discussion about the elements that trigger-ing this fact and the peculiarities that Involved the adaptation processes of these indi-viduals in welcoming society, especially in the cultural and religious aspects. The sources used were the most diverse: books of memorialists, newspapers of the period, testimonies of descendants, bibliography correlates and iconography.
