A cidade dos vencidos: São Luís, seus espaços e usos em José do Nascimento Moraes
Abstract
This article aims to analyze the city of São Luís, during the First Republic, as presented in the novel Vencidos e Degenerados by José do Nascimento Moraes, published in 1915. Based on the dialogue between History and Literature, we investigate how the author elaborates the history of a city that, after the liberation of the enslaved and the arrival of the Republic, remains tied to old prejudices of color and plunged into an economic lethargy due to permanences of social and cultural order, seeking to understand the relationships of individuals among themselves and with the spaces of the city based on literary, racial and urban issues.
