SLAVERY IN COURT SOCIETY:
AN ANALYSIS BASED ON THE LITERARY WORK OF JOSÉ DE ALENCAR

This article aims to analyze the representations of slavery in the context of court society, based on the literary work of writer José de Alencar. The research is part of the perspective of Cultural History and uses bibliographical and documentary research, with an emphasis on Literature as a fundamental historical source. The discussion will be based on the concepts of “Lettered Practices” (Cardoso, 2016) and “Representation” (Chartier, 1990), with the aim of understanding how slavery is represented in Alencar's production and to what extent this representation dialogues with the values and context of court society.
