DETECTION OF Leishmania chagasi IN CATS (Felis catus) FROM VISCERA LEISHMANIASIS ENDEMIC AREA IN BRAZIL

The number of confirmed cases of feline leishmaniasis has increased in endemic areas in recent years, which suggests that the feline species should no longer be considered an uncommon host for Leishmaniasis spp. Thus, the objective of this work was to investigate the occurrence of Leishmaniasis spp infection in cats in the city of Campo Grande, where visceral leishmaniasis is endemic. The 110 cats studied were subjected to clinical and serological examination by IFA to determine the titer of anti-Leshimania antibodies. The parasitological investigation of seropositive animals consisted of cytological examination, tissue culture, and PCR of bone marrow aspirates and popliteal lymph nodes. Serum positivity was detected in eight animals (7.27%). Amastigotes were not detected by cytological examinations and promastigotes were not observed in tissue culture. However, three (40.2%) of the seven processed samples were positive according to PCR, which confirms the cat's contact with the parasite.
