Pyometra in bitch with renal complications
Keywords:
pyometra, complication, renal failureAbstract
Pyometra is an acute or chronic suppurative infection of the uterus, with a large accumulation of pus in the uterine cavity. Its development is preceded by cystic endometrial hyperplasia, which is an exaggerated and abnormal response of the endometrium to chronic and repeated progesterone stimulation, leading to accumulation of fluid in the uterine lumen and endometrial glands. It usually affects middle-aged or elderly animals, but young animals can also present this pathology, due to hormonal treatments. This pathology results from a bacterial infection of the endometrium, mainly by Escherichia coli, after cystic hyperplasia as a result of prolonged hormonal stimulation. Acute renal failure (ARF) is the main complication of canine pyometra and occurs secondary to glomerulonephritis due to deposition of immune complexes, being directly linked to long periods of hospitalization and death in bitches with pyometra. This report aims to describe a case of pyometra in a female dog with kidney complications, treated at the Bullmastiff veterinary clinic.References
