Productive performance and egg quality of semi-heavy laying hens fed with different lipid sources

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of including 2.5% soybean oil, 2.5% beef tallow, and a mixture of 1.25% soybean oil + 1.25% beef tallow in the diet of semi-heavy laying hens on performance and egg quality. Chickens of the Hisex Brown lineage were used.  The design was a completely randomized, consisting of three treatments and six replications, with three birds per experimental unit. Three experimental diets were evaluated: the inclusion of 2.5% soybean oil, 2.5% beef tallow, and the third diet containing 1.25% beef tallow + 1.25% soybean oil. The parameters evaluated were: egg production (%), feed consumption (g/bird/day), feed conversion per egg mass (kg/kg) and dozen eggs (kg/dozen), weight of egg, yolk, albumen, and shell, percentage of yolk, albumen, and shell (%), specific gravity (g/cm3), and variation in body weight (g). There were no differences (p>0.05) in any evaluated performance parameters. For egg quality, only the Haugh Unit had a significant difference (p<0.05). Diets with 2.5% soy oil, 2.5% bovine tallow, and a mixture of 1.25% soy oil + 1.25% bovine tallow can be used as lipid sources in the feed, without interfering with the performance and quality of eggs of semi-heavy laying hens; however, the diet containing 2.5% soybean oil provided better results for the Haugh unit.
