General aspects of boar semen cryopreservation

The use of frozen semen for artificial insemination has been studied for over 30 years and the advances in this area are mainly due to research the different factors that influence the semen retention and fertility of an ejaculate. The optimal protocol for cryopreservation has not been fully elucidated by researchers in the field, even though it is often used for preservation of tissues and cells such as sperm cells. This is due to the fact that the success of cryopreservation depends on different parameters, among them the use of cryoprotectants as well as a suitable concentration, which differ between species. Several studies were made seeking a better freezing of boar semen, also, aiming to reduce the rates of freezing damages caused by the lowering of temperature. Although there are still many problems in the process of cryopreservation of boar semen, some authors report that the use of frozen semen, outrank the cooled semen, due to a procedure that preserves cells for long periods of time. This study aimed to report the main problems associated with freezing semen, and technique advances through a general survey about the main aspects of cryopreservation with emphasis on swine.
