Abstract

This article aims to briefly present and analyze the works A Revelation of Love (c. 1395) by the English mystic Julian of Norwich (c.1343 - c. 1416), in its long version, and The Book of Margery Kempe (c. 1438) by Margery Kempe (1373 - c. 1438), observing the pioneering spirit of the two authors within the English medieval literary context. The analysis will be carried out with the contribution of feminist literary criticism. We will use as theorical approach authors such as Temple (2016), Watson and Jenkins (2006), Régnier-Bohler (1990), Fantuz (2019), Bynum (1982), Bale (2015), Troch (2013), Telles (2017) and Morrison (2002), among others. Through our research, we may consider Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe as transgressive women, as they broke with roles conventional to women of their time. Her writings bring the female role into a new perspective of religious, social and literary protagonism and we highlight how this process of rescuing and re-reading her works can be renewing for the studies of literature, culture and history.
