This interview with an Israeli army refusenik (pseudonym: Daniel) explores the individual trajectory of resistance to military service in Israel, highlighting processes of ideological indoctrination, social segregation, and the break with Zionism. Daniel recounts his Zionist upbringing, life in a kibbutz, initial contact with Palestinians, and how personal experiences and interpersonal relationships influenced the shift in his political perspective, leading to the break with Zionist ideology. The account illustrates the role of socialization, education, and national ceremonies in shaping political beliefs, as well as how segregation hinders critical questioning of the military system and the state. The interview also reveals the challenges faced by refuseniks, including social isolation, loss of friends, and professional repercussions, as well as the importance of support networks, such as Mesarvot, in providing legal and emotional guidance. This study contributes to Oral History by offering a personal and detailed perspective on resistance to militarization and political dissent in conflict contexts, allowing for an understanding of the mechanisms sustaining Zionism and occupation, as well as the factors that may lead to critical awareness and civil disobedience.
