MANIFESTOS FOR HISTORY E A ECONOMIA POLÍTICA DA HISTORIOGRAFIA GLOBAL

Abstract

This article offers a critical reading of contemporary historiography through the lens of a political economy of global historiography. Drawing on Karl Marx, Antonio Gramsci, François Hartog, and Milton Santos, it argues that historical knowledge must be understood not merely as a scientific discourse but as a social and economic practice embedded in the dynamics of global capitalism. Through an analysis of Manifestos for History (2007), by Keith Jenkins, Sue Morgan, and Alun Munslow, the text identifies a legitimacy crisis within the neoliberal regime of knowledge production. This crisis manifests in the tension between the pursuit of scientific rigor and the adaptation to academic and editorial markets, which turn the historian into a productive agent within a global knowledge economy. The article contends that historiography can only recover its critical potential by recognizing itself as a form of social labor shaped by material and political determinations. Such recognition allows for a reconfiguration of the historian’s role and the reopening of historiography’s emancipatory horizon in the face of the commodification of historical knowledge.
