MOVIMENTOS POPULARES DE RESISTÊNCIA CONTRÁRIOS AO IMPÉRIO ROMANO (SÉCULO I EC)

Ancient Palestine was located in a peripheral region of the Roman Empire. According to the writings of the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, from the year 63 BCE onwards, the said territory was characterized by the emergence of popular movements that opposed Roman power, due to the conditions of misery offered by the latter to the lower social classes, composed mostly of Jews. Based on such information, this article first proposes to make some notes about the historical environment in which these popular movements were historically inserted. It then seeks to summarize the typologies of these movements, which were arranged in three categories of individuals: bandits, prophets and messiahs, among them the historical subjects John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth. The text uses the concept of social banditry, by Eric Hobsbawm, and is supported by the works of Richard Horsley, André Chevitarese and Vítor Almeida, who are experts in the subject addressed.
