Abstract

The article takes as its object the images and texts produced by the Brazilian press about
the 1915 drought refugees. The ships that transported the poor and the places where
they were landed are emphasized, as well as the Ilha das Flores Lodge, where they were
destined before sent to work camps in São Paulo. Emphasis is given to the exposure, by
the press and in the ports, of the depleted bodies of the retreating people, hunger and
despair, configuring a morbid language that, by contrast, reinforces the identities that
were being built during the urban reforms that took place in the early decades of the
Republican period.
