STATE, CHARITY AND PHILANTHROPY: THE HOLY HOUSE AND THE ASYLUM ALIENED IN MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IN TERESINA (1889-1909)

This text aims to understand how the Santa Casa de Misercórdia of Teresina and the Mental Disorder House, while hospital institutions acted to provide a public assistance in the city during the first decade of the Republic. Reports, speeches and messages of the presidents of the province and of the governors of the First Republic were used, as well as several newspapers of publication and circulation in Teresina and a documentary corpus of crafts, reports and minutes produced within Teresina Santa Casa de Misericórdia. The emphasis in both institutions happens according to the assistance they have provided to the poor people of the city, attending the most different diseases that affected this class and for setting up, together with the State, a tangled discourse between philanthropic practices, from a health care medicine, as well as the idea of reorganization of the space present in several Brazilian cities in the first Republic.
