Abstract

The present article addresses the issue of leprosy in Espírito Santo and aims at analyzing the
daily life of the Itanhenga Colony, an agricultural colony built in 1937 to shelter lepers.
Besides locating the history of leprosy in Espírito Santo and the actions to fight the disease
taken by the medical and sanitary authorities, the article seeks to situate, based on the
administrative documents produced by the state’s leprosy service, the farming activities
carried out in the Colony by the inmates. Thus, agricultural work is revealed as a form of
sociability and as a possibility of hosting and of life re-elaborat ion for the inmates.
