Abstract

The works Breve Notícia sobre a província do Rio Grande do Norte (1877) of Manoel Ferreira Nobre is considered by the norte-rio-grandense historiography as the first history of Rio Grande do Norte. The memory surrounding the pioneering work was a construction of the members of Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Norte (IHGRN). In the 70's, members of the association republished the Breve Notícia, making comments on the work, as well as updating and correcting it. In what way has the Breve Notícias been read by the historiography installed in the IHGRN? What criticism and comments were made to the first history of Rio Grande do Norte? The article analyzes the reception of this work.
