Nutrology applied to Veterinary Medicine
Keywords:
Dogs, Illnesses, Cats, Clinical nutritionAbstract
For a long time, veterinarians have been largely concerned with the development of new drugs that would assist in clinical routine, forgetting, however, one of the most important factors in the care of sick patients, nutritional support. In the area of nutrology, a medical specialty that studies nutrients, their functions in the body and the treatment of nutrient disorders in diseases, numerous studies have been carried out in recent decades, with the aim of developing strategies for the nutritional management of diseases. In veterinary medicine, the main focus is on determining nutritional requirements and disease prevention, so the application of certain nutrients in disease modulation is still in its early stages. Therefore, with this review, the aim is to report dietary measures, previously scientifically determined, that help in the treatment and maintenance of obese dogs and cats, with chronic kidney disease, liver disease, cardiomyopathies and food allergies.
