Anthrozoology defines the interactions between humans and animals, discussed through biological and philosophical questions, which are fundamental to the study and practice of animal welfare in the current society. The philosophers divide opinions, being classified as philosophers who go against the rights, respect, and animal welfare, represented by Aristotle, Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, René Descartes, and Imannuel Kant, and philosophers in favor of rights, respect, and animal welfare, represented by Regan, Montaigne, Pythagoras, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, John Rawls, Peter Singer, and Nussbaum. Moreover, biological studies, which focus on the neuroscience, anatomy, physiology, and species behavior, prove that the basic emotional centers in the brain are the same between animals and humans, so both have the capacity to suffer physically and psychologically. Thus, with this article, we intend to carry out a discussion concerning the issues related to animal welfare and the biological and philosophical aspects related to it.
