The species Coragyps atratus, popularly known as black-headed vulture, belongs to the order Cathartiformes, being classified as a diurnal bird of prey. In wild animal medicine, ocular injuries caused by trauma are the most reported in studies. The objective of this work is to report a case of endophthalmitis caused by septic implant in a black-headed vulture. The morphologic diagnosis was marked diffuse endophthalmitis containing intralesional bacterial colonies and moderate multifocal mixed optic neuritis. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) occurred as a result of ocular trauma, with inflammatory processes observed in organs of the digestive and respiratory systems. According to necroscopic and histopathological examination, the diagnosis was severe endophthalmitis associated with septicemia.
