Advances in genetic breeding program of Cachara in Brazil
Keywords:

The objective of this review is to describe the characteristics of surubins and the implementation of the genetic improvement program for the species Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum during the period from 2008 to 2013. Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum or cachara is one of the potential native species for Brazilian aquaculture. Cultivation is concentrated in the Midwest region, where factors: Adaptability to the environment, Zootechnical characteristics and high commercial value make production viable. The species has consolidated studies in biotechnology of reproduction, development and adaptation to the various cultivation systems. The producing regions have a continuous supply of fingerlings, increasing the potential for consolidation of genetic improvement programs with the species. With this, a partnership was developed between Embrapa and the State University of Maringá, with the purpose of developing the cachara genetic improvement program. The cachara genetic improvement program began in 2008 with the creation of 72 families and ended in 2013 under the original management guidelines.References
