Progress and enlightnment in the USA: a dialogue between Henry Miller and Theodor Adorno
Keywords:
Enlightenment. Progress. Capitalism. Barbarism. Praxis.Abstract
Here we try to read the book written by Henry Miller called The Air-Conditioned Nightmare based on the Theodor Adorno’s philosophy. For this purpose, the concepts of enlightenment and progress are considered as developed by the Frankfurt thinker, considering mainly the Dialectic of Enlightenment. The dialogue proposed here intends to explain how Miller understands American industrial development during World War II, as the expression of an idea of progress in wich barbarism lies. In this sense, the questioning that guides this dialogue seems to concern the very meaning of human praxis.
