Abstract

In a letter to Ludwig von Ficker Wittgenstein claims that his book, the Tractatus logico-philosophicus is informed by an ethical goal. With this statement in mind, this paper aims to demonstrate how Wittgenstein’s rejection of traditional metaphysical claims in philosophy is ethically motivated based on this same goal. We’ll argue that the ethical aspect of his philosophical activity unfolds into two facets, namely, intellectual honesty and peace in thoughts. From this we shall conclude that, since traditional philosophical discourse tries to go beyond the rules for the correct application of the logic of our language, it must be ethically qualified in a negative sense.
