Abstract

I approach in this paper a problem about general names: How can a particular idea refer to numerous other particulars? To answer this question, I first present Berkeley's position as a critique of Locke's conclusions on the subject. Then I bring the position called resemblance nominalism, developed by Hume and that will be the main of this work. In a third moment Russell's arguments against this type of nominalism as well as a defense against Russell developed in the contemporaneity by Rodriguez- Pereyra will be analyzed.
