Ontology of consciousness and its characteristics under the view of biological naturalism

Abstract

This study aims to elaborate an analysis about the way that the American philosopher John Rogers Searle (1932) understands the idea of consciousness. So, Searle works used for the development of this study are The Rediscovery of the Mind (1997) and The Mystery of Consciousness (1998). The methodology will be as follows: first will be investigated the arguments for ontological irreducibility. After, will be analyzed Searle's definition of consciousness. In the end, will be analyzed the characteristics of consciousness. It is believed that this study will bring a interesting comprehension about the biological naturalism.

Mestrando no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Filosofia (PPGFIL) pela Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul (UFFS), Campus Chapecó, na linha de pesquisa "Conhecimento, Linguagem e Realidade". Licenciado em Filosofia pela Universidade Federal Da Fronteira Sul, Campus Erechim (ano de conclusão: 2018). Principais áreas de interesse: Filosofia da Mente, Lógica e Filosofia da Linguagem. Projeto de pesquisa intitulado “Seria o Naturalismo Biológico de J. Searle um Epifenomenalismo?”. Bolsista do( a): Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, CAPES, Brasil.
