Abstract

Contemporary philosophy is filled with disciplines that investigate topics related to a central concept. Examples are the philosophies of memory, technology, and measurements – the last is the subject of this article. Although this area has been gaining prominence – especially because of notable contributions, such as of Nancy Cartwright, Bas van Fraassen, Eran Tal, and Hasok Chang – it remains little discussed in the Brazilian academy. That is due to the lack of studies paying attention to what the field is, its history and importance, whose elucidation constitutes the objective of this article, through this question: since when and in what senses does a philosophy of measures exist?
