ABSTRACT

This brief study tries to show that, in contrast with most part of secondary literature, the Tractatus de Intellectus Emendatione does not result an unfinished text. We intend, therefore, to found our interpretative premiss on an analysis of the third mode of perception. We shall begin by establishing the limits to this mode of perception, with the aim of showing that, since the text is written under the perspective of the third mode and not of the fourth one, its unfinishness is just apparent. This appearance hides severe critics to Cartesian philosophy, which adopts preferentially the analytical method instead of the synthetic one in philosophical matters. From an identification of the (Cartesian) analysis of third mode of (Espinozian) perception, we will support the idea that the choice of third mode of perception intends to show that the true philosophy must operate from the fourth mode of perception and not from the third one, and that it is just through the former we can reach/attain philosophy’s aims.

KEY WORDS: analysis, synthesis, mode of perception, ratio, true philosophy.
}, number={2}, journal={Revista Conatus - Filosofia de Spinoza (ISSN 1981-7509)}, author={Münchow, Cleiton Zóia}, year={2008}, month={jan.}, pages={17–22} }
