The physiotherapy in the treatment of the sequelae of canine distemper

Abstract

Canine distemper is a viral and multisystemic disease that affects the main body organs. The clinical signs have a gradual progression and the affected animals can present anorexia, dehydration, diarrhea, respiratory alterations, ocular alterations and neurological signs, causing disorders in voluntary movement and welfare of the animal. The complementary treatment implies in the use of veterinary physiotherapy that has been obtaining satisfactory results in the recovery of the sequelae of canine distemper. The aim of this study was to report a clinical case in which physiotherapy resources were used to treat the sequelae of canine distemper. The female dog in the present case report, was diagnosed with canine distemper and, as the conventional treatment ended, recurrent sequelae of this disease were observed, such as: generalized muscular atrophy, numerous contractures and incapacity to ambulate. After performing fourteen physiotherapy sessions using magnetotherapy, electrotherapy, kinesiotherapy, laser and hydrotherapy, the dog was discharged from the treatment due to improvement. Therefore, physiotherapy presents important and effective properties that when associated, can assist in the treatment of sequelae resulting from the canine distemper. With that, it provides reduction in clinical signs, better quality of life and animal welfare and, consequently, it contributes for the return of daily activities and significant impact for the patient.
